Battle of the Year
Carrom has done it again once more.
Luring those unawared into a lifetime addiction.
Starting off with Dr Lim Chan Meng, who was the first Medical Officer to play a game with our fellow NSFs. All he wanted was just to pass some time and trying to get to know us better by playing a few games together. Little did he know that what he had done was a drastic mistake. By the time he realized what he had brought himself into, it was already too late.
He was addicted to it and he needs a regular dosage of the game in order to be working up to his usual standards.
Every now and then he would be seen rushing into the mess room and looking for people to play with.
Poor Dr Jeremy Wee who was both a close colleague and friend of his, wasn't spared too. He was deeply influenced by Dr Lim and had to accompany him for rounds of carrom whenever he feels like it.
It didn't take long for Dr Jeremy to be addicted either.
There was once whereby Dr Tan Kheng Liang was asked to play a game with them.
Dr Tan is a psychiatrist.
Probably that's the only reason why he could restrain himself from getting mesmerised by carrom when no one else could.
He played only a few games and managed to escape the clutches of evil by not returning whenever Satan calls out to him.
It was told that Dr Tan played carrom like no other. The way he shoots the striker is extremely unique and I am very sure that nobody else would dare to master his maneuver.
He practically uses his whole palm to move the striker seed.
It is like a Cobra stance, whereby he straightens his fingers together and using them to hit onto the striker with great speed.
It is the hardest technique that one can learn...
That's why you can't blame him for not scoring at all.
Yesterday was the day everybody was waiting for.
The carrom competition organised by Dr Jeremy himself.
He was so much engrossed in the game that he actually held a competition that consist of a $45 prize money.
Maybe he is far beyond addiction already.
Someone who has attained immortality by selling his soul in return for his devotion in carrom.
Before the starting of the main event, Dr Lim and Dr Jeremy were both playing against each other to warm up. At that point of time, there were still one or too cases left but Dr Jeremy was already not in his room seeing the remaining patients. They were then attended to by the reservist Medical Officers who were still there. There was one case which was personally brought to Dr Jeremy in the mess room. The electrocardiogram had to seen by Dr Jeremy so that he could certify whether the person's cardiac cycle was normal or not.
Dr Jeremy was very much engrossed in the game and didn't really bother.
He took the file, glanced through it and said it was normal.
'Pes A.'
'This one Pes A.'
Then he laughed, followed by everyone else.
Let's just hope that he knows what he's doing and not anyhow grading pre-enlistees in the midst of something which is considered less important.
The poor guy might be medically unfit for strenuous vocations.
He could be someone who was excused from physical activities all along during his school days or someone who can't run long distances and carry heavy loads.
But the next thing you know,
He could be posted to become a Commando or Naval diver.
The competition soon started and everyone got into pairs.
I was with Yean.
Elias with Victor.
Aaron with John.
Li Soon with Joshua,
and Dr Lim with Dr Jeremy.
I and Yean were the first to be eliminated thanks to me.
I was so accurate that I scored the last seed for our opponents and made us lost.
I may have lost,
but at least I know I am worth more than $45. (Divided by two somemore.)
I went out of the mess room as soon as I couldn't participate in any more games.
I heard the news that Aaron and John had won the title by beating Dr Lim and Jeremy in the finals.
I am not sure if they really got the prize money as Joshua and Li Soon felt that the whole elimination system wasn't fair. They did protest about it but I couldn't be bothered if there were actually any changes at all in the end.
I would have done the same too,
if the prize money was $4500.
