Twists of Fate

Sometimes things just don't go the way you want them to be.
They are not within our control and there's only one word to describe it all.

Suey.
In case one does not know, it's unlucky in Hokkien.
And it's about time you give yourself a finger up in the ass for not knowing such a simple word.

A couple of weeks ago, I had a problem with my PC.
I turned it on and was using it like how I always do.
Surfing the Net and all.
Everything was running smoothly for about 15 minutes when suddenly,
the monitor screen blacked out.
I restarted my computer immediately to see if the same problem would happen again.
Usually, there must be something really wrong if not it wouldn't have fucked up in the first place. I had my fingers crossed hoping for a miracle while rebooting but it was in vain. The same problem persisted and it somehow became worse after I did some resetting for a few times. Eventually nothing came out of the screen even though the power was still operating.
A certain device of my computer had malfunctioned and the best part was that I couldn't confirm which one it was.

Based on my past experiences with sickening computer breakdowns,
I could say that a high chance would be due to the graphics card.
It's hard to determine whether the fault really lies with it, so it's better to narrow down the possibilities of which device had gone wrong.

I needed a spare graphics card to test my computer with.
If it runs smoothly with another card in it, then obviously the root of the problem was none other than my own graphics card itself.

Where could I get another graphics card in the shortest amount of time?

My brother's computer is just across my room and I would have taken it out if it doesn't come integrated together with the motherboard.
Brandon lives just a few blocks away from me but he told me that he couldn't unplug the card if not the warranty would then be voided.
Ivan was the next person I called for help.
Fortunately,
he wasn't working on that day. Ivan was on his way for a swim and told me that he would get back to me as soon as he was done with his workout. He told me to bring my card over to his house and test instead.

A few hours later, I met up with Brandon downstairs my block and walked together to Ivan's house. Brandon wanted to get his packet of cigarettes from Ivan before meeting his cousin regarding job issues.

Speaking of cigarettes,
I remembered Ivan wanting to quit smoking so much. He was very determined to a certain extent and didn't buy his own cigarettes for a period of time.
He was smoking so much lesser than before and it did occur to me that he might not be smoking anymore soon. Ivan had set his mind straight and was determined to quit at all costs.

Unfortunately, he didn't manage to succeed.
He picked up smoking again as soon as he gave up on intense masturbations.

Brandon and I reached Ivan's house after a 15 minutes walk.
We had to wait at the door for some time before he came running over and opened it.
Nicolle was the only one at his house so the reason why it took him so long to open the door was self-explanatory.

Ivan then shut down his computer so that his card could be switched to mine for testing.
His computer couldn't start up too,
so it was probably my card that had became useless.
Ivan unplugged the card and then changed back to his own one. He was doing all the manual work while I was by the side supervising all the way.
Surprisingly, the computer didn't manage to startup even when the original card was being inserted back on.

'ORhh...'
'You spoil Ivan's computer.'
Brandon muttered from behind.

I was like,
'What the fuck.'
'I didn't even touch his PC at all.'

It wasn't making any sense at all, but ultimately I was the one who asked for Ivan's help.
Which means that I was partly at fault if his computer were to come up with any problems.
Ivan wanted to rest so he told us to make a move first.
He further added that he would troubleshoot his computer and let me know of the outcome.

I left his house with the impression that my graphics card was really fucked and went to the nearest PC shop at 201 to get a new one.
I got one at $84 and rushed back home to try it out.

Chao

Chee

Bye.

The screen blacked out once again after Windows started up.
I panicked and perspired all over.
I realised that I might have wasted $84 for nothing. Monitors usually aren't the problem to this kind of situations but I didn't hesitate anymore already.
I summoned all my strength and turned into Hercules. I ran into my brother's room and lifted his monitor over to test with my computer. Actually carrying the huge monitor wasn't any difficult at all.

Unplugging the wires was the Killer.

There are always millions of wires coming out of nowhere and entangled together near a power point.
Just untangling one of them out would be like knitting a sweater for my grandma.

Nah.
Too Bad.
It wasn't the monitor either.
Carrying to and fro the big ass 17 inch monitor was enough Gym for me the next two weeks.

I sat down and rested for a moment while thinking of what to do next.

'If the new graphics card can't work too, then probably there isn't any fault in my previous one in the first place.'
I thought to myself.

I immediately kept the new card into it's box and switched to my old one.
To my astonishment,
and for the Love of God...

It came back to life.

I do not understand why.
There was no logic at all.
All I know was that I spent $84 at a charity and did some workouts.

Ivan called me later in the day and told me that his computer was still not in a working condition.
I offered to pass him the graphics card so that he could try to see if anything improved.

In time to come,
Ivan's computer was fixed and reformatted by one of our friends.
He claimed that Ivan's computer RAM was malfunctioning and also his graphic card had broke down.
Right now his computer is doing fine,
with my newly bought graphics card as one of the operating devices.

In other words,
I have nothing else better to do other than providing free upgrade for others.

Chinese New Year 1st day.
Went to visit my relatives as usual.

Brandon called me in the late afternoon asking if I was going to Amanda's house afterwards for a gambling session.

I didn't know who Amanda was before that.
The only Amanda whom I know of was Kian Leong's girlfriend.

There was once when Brandon told me that Amanda kissed him on the cheeks.
Like I said, I didn't have a clue who she was so naturally I thought he was refering to the one who is together with Kian Leong for more than 4 years now.

'How could you do this to Kian Leong behind his back?'
'Nabei, you do like this you steady or not, you ask yourself.'
I confronted Brandon straight in the face,
on MSN.

I really do admire Brandon for being such a likeable guy towards the opposite sex.
I also respect his bravery for accepting a kiss from someone like Amanda,
knowing that he would probably destroy his friendship with Kian Leong,
or simply his own reputation.

The only reply that came from Brandon was,

'Chee Bye...'

And he didn't talk to me anymore throughout the whole night.

I asked him what time they were going to Amanda's house.
The place was at Loyang Valley and the usual friends would be present.
They were going there quite early so I told him that I would go there to join them later in the night.

I met up with Annabelle and caught a movie at Tampines Century Square.
Fearless.
Not too bad.

While we were walking towards the interchange, I called Brandon and asked him how to get to Amanda's house.

'19,39' -->(29 and 39 sounds almost the same)
He mumbled.

'19,39?'
I repeated myself right after him.

'Ya.. Ya..'
With that,
he ended the call.

Annabelle was right beside me when I used the phone. She could hear very clearly the numbers which I had said.
We kept a lookout for the 2 buses and 39 came first.
We got up the bus and I called Xuguang on the handphone.

I didn't want to call Brandon again because I could tell he was pretty engrossed in gambling from the previous call.

'Eh, you know how to go to Loyang Valley or not?'
I asked.

'When you see Loyang Point, drop at next bus stop.'
'Not the one at Loyang Point.'
'Another one then drop.'
Xuguang replied confidently,
without even asking what bus I was in.

He stays in Pasir Ris so he should know the areas better.
Probably there's only a few buses heading there and there's only one route.

Annabelle and I opened my eyes as big as those of a Goldfish,
looking out for Loyang Point.
At the same time, I was making silly jokes of how we might end up in Yishun if anything went wrong.

Bus 39 goes from Tampines to Yishun via expressway.

It would be real funny if we got ourselves into a place where it's far beyond our imaginations.
It's not that bad if it was like Eunos or Paya Lebar.
Yishun is all the way up North.
In addition, I have only been there less than 5 times in my entire life. The distance travelled there would be in the same category of Tuas or the boundaries of Johor Bahru.

We cracked ourselves up with all the nonsensical remarks of what we could actually do in Yishun at that time of the night.

'How come don't have Loyang Valley one?'
Annabelle asked.
We had been travelling in Pasir Ris region for quite some time and yet there wasn't any Loyang Point in sight.
I called Xuguang again.

'Eh, you wanna dua me go Yishun ah.'
'Say got Loyang Valley how come don't have.'

'What bus you taking?'
Xuguang sensed something was not right.

'39 lah. Brandon say 39 what.'

At this point of time, it was too late.
Before I could do anything else, the bus swerved into the expressway.

'Eh.... You guys go ahead and enjoy yourselves.'
'I am on my way to Yishun liao.'
I told him as though I was departing for another country.

I looked at Annabelle in the eye,
not knowing whether to laugh.
Or cry.
